Obit for Robert E. "Bob" Mims -
VALDOSTA (Georgia - unknown date) - Robert E. "Bob" Mims, 78 died Wednesday,
Feb 16, at his residence after a long illness. Born in Abbeville, he had
lived in Valdosta for 23 years. In 1938, he entered CCC Camp #1436 in
Nahunta. He had been manager of Bray Home Improvements, retired from the
Celanese Corp. in 1970 and in 1983 he retired from Gilman Paints where he
was a Representative and consultant for the Georgia, Florida, and Alabama
areas. Mr. Mims was a charter member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, and
was a former member and deacon of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Albany.
In 1940, Mr. Mims entered the Navy and was assigned to the USS Charleston.
In 1943, he was on the USS Pittsburg in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska where
he received a commendation. He was a member of the American Legion, the
VFW, and was a Mason for 47 years.
Survivors include his wife, the former Beatrice Coody, Valdosta; two
daughters and a son-in-law, Anne and Howard Wallace, Gainesville, Fla., and
Deanna Mims, Tallahassee, Fla.; two brothers Edwin Mims, Brevard, N.C., and
Wilson Mims, Sylvester. Mr. Mims was preceded in death by a brother, Cecil
Mims.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of the Carson McLane
Funeral Home. Rev. William D. "Biff" Coker and the Rev. Randy Stephen are
to officiate. Burial will be at Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will
receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of
flowers, donations may be made to the Trinity Presbyterian Church, 4100
Bemiss Road, Valdosta, GA 31602.
