Georgia, I received quite a bit of information on this family from Howard Minks, gg grandson of John. He did not know much about John's orgins and I think I have discovered some information about that.
John Minks was born between 1800 and 1803 in Virginia. His age was reported differently on each census from 1850 to 1870. His place of birth was consistently reported as Virginia. His name was listed on all known records to be John Minks. I could find no evidence he used the name of Nicholas. There was a Nicholas Minks in the same general area and I believe many researchers have combined the two men into one. There is strong evidence John and Nicholas were related.
John married Susanna Surgenor August 5, 1827 in Grayson County, Virginia, daughter of William Surginor. She was born 1806 in Virginia. John is next found on a 1828 tax record in Grayson County. The couple remained in Grayson until about 1835. John and Susan are listed on the 1830 census for Grayson with a young son and daughter. From census records we know that the oldest four of their children reported Virginia as their birthplace. This is consistent with the first land record for John in Rockcastle County, Kentucky in 1835. He settles in Rockcastle near the Skaggs Creek water course. Nicholas Minks has been in the area from about 1819 . By 1840 there are several young men with the surname of Minks or Mink. Proof of John’s relationship to these men remains elusive.
John was listed as a farmer on census records in 1850 and 1870 but as a cooper in 1860. A cooper was usually a prominent member of the community who made storage barrels or tubs. He and Susan remained in Rockcastle until their deaths both occurring some time after 1870 and before 1880. It is believed they are buried on family ground some where in the backwoods of Kentucky.
Children of John Minks and Susanna Surgenor are:
a. Elizabeth Jane Minks, born June 13, 1828 in Crab Orchard, Kentucky.
1. William S. Minks, born March 31, 1830 in Virginia; died February 23, 1911 in Lincoln County, Crab Orchard, Kentucky.
2. Emanuel Minks, born March 29, 1832 in Virginia; died August 25, 1908 in Kentucky.
3.James Harvey Minks, born December 31, 1837 in Crab Orchard, Kentucky; died April 13, 1902 in Moreland, Kentucky.
4.Nicholas Minks, born 1838 in Virginia.
b. Sarah A Minks, born 1840 in Virginia.
c. Lilitha Minks, born 1844 in Rockcastle County, Kentucky. She married John B Spears August 30, 1865 in Crab Orchard, Kentucky; born 1844 in Scott County, Virginia.
5. John M Minks, born 1845 in Virginia.
d. Susan Francis Minks, born 1848 in Crab Orchard, Kentucky; died November 19, 1935 in Glendale, Arizona.
e. Mary Jane Minks, born 1849.
6. Samuel Abraham Minks, born March 25, 1853 in Crab Orchard, Kentucky; died April 27, 1920 in Moreland, Kentucky.
