Charles L. Benjamin was appointed Marshal of Saginaw City on Oct. 24,
1867. He served until April 12, 1869. This is the period when Saginaw
consisted of two cities, Saginaw City (west side) and East Saginaw (east
side). I have two city directories, 1881 and 1884 of that period that show
him as in the Livery and Undertaking business at the SE cor of Cass and
Hamilton with the note: "res opp same, SC". You can peruse the city
directories at the Genealogy room of the Hoyt Library for a full listing of
which years he was in business there. I believe he was succeeded by his
son, Mills Benjamin, who also ran the Livery and Undertaking there. Up
until the time it was taken over by the sports shop there was an old horse-
drawn hearse still parked in the stable there. I believe Mills' widow lived
in one of the apartments overhead and slightly south (over the book store)
many years later. - F. Coats
