Sorry to take so long to reply, but I've been on holiday.

I don't know much about the Halls before they came to Canada (my family is the Smiths, that Norman Hall married into).

Norman Hall came from Penfield NY, which is near Rochester, so if there is a connection between Norman Hall and your Halls, it may be a distant one.

I don't know if this will be of any help, but on the 1871 census, Norman's brother Jason (for whom his son was named) originally gave his national origin as "Dutch" but then this was crossed out and replaced by "American".
