David,
You will need an exact date of death to efficiently locate the obit in the
Ypsilanti newspapers. His death record should be recorded at the Courthouse.
Also check GENDIS on-line death index (Mich. Deaths to 1897) You might
contact the Ypsilanti Historical Society Archive.
http://www.ypsilantihistoricalsociety.org/ They have a large obit card file
of Ypsilanti area people that may have a death date/obit. Give Gerry Pety a
call and he should be able to see if Ephraim has an obit card. Here are
their hours:
The Archives are open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. (Note - Beginning May 4th, 2003 the hours of
operation for the Fletcher-White Archives will be Monday and Wednesday from
9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and Sunday from 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m.) Serious
historians and researchers, who may need additional times or days, should
call Gerry Pety at 734-572-0437 to make further arrangements.
Ypsilanti newspapers are available at Ypsilanti District Library and Eastern
Michigan University but they are unindexed.
Good luck,
Jan Tripp

Subject: [MIWASHTE] Request source information
Need help to locate or access source information on Great Great Grandfather,
Ephraim Cummings. Last known address, according to the Jun 1, 1880 Census,
was
2d Ward, Ypsilanti. Age 67. Living with second wife, Martha, age 79. I
suspect Ephraim may have died somewhere in Washtenaw County. Does anyone
know the
name of the local newspaper which was published in the 1880's? Are articles
(obits?) easily available?
Thank you,
David Cummings
