Hi
As an outsider looking in and just recently subscribing to this list
I have not received a response to my query regarding directories
for the City of Detroit 1900 --->. When a subscriber
is not familiar with what is available for research and is not familiar
with the area, a response would be greatly appreciated. Directing
a researcher to a place where this information can be located or
suggesting someone who would do directory lookups would
be a great contribution and help to the person making the query.

Hello, P Goodman,
I, too, live outside of Detroit ... about 60 miles north & outside of Flint,
MI. At the Flint library, we only have a couple Detroit directories,
somewhere in the early 1960's, I think, so if I needed the type of reference
you are looking for, here's what I'd do: Go to the website for the Detroit
Public Library and inquire there. Other than the State's main library at the
capitol, Lansing, Detroit would house it's own directories.

Generally, every major city or at least the county seats are going to house
their own local records or be able to re-direct you to the appropriate agency
or historical society handling it. And your own local public library should
also be able to assist you in your search of sources. You pay the taxes for
it, you're entitled to their assistance when you need it.

I greatly appreciate all the little bits of advice I "hear" and some lookups
which others on another rootsweb list have done for me, but I have seen
dozens of "help requests" like yours go on the list in the few short weeks
I've been on the list, and that's amounts to a-lot-of-look'in-up to do.

There are some professional genealogists on the list who could probably help
if you indicate you're that serious about the search, but also keep in mind
that this is Easter break - a prime vacation time, Spring mid-term or final
exams - lots of family things going on and folks are already busy. If you
don't get a volunteer now, try again in 3-6 weeks.
Or call the Detroit public library.

Nuff said. Use your 'knoodle', Poodle !
Have great week all the same!
