If you decide to visit Woodmere, I'd suggest going during the time the
office is open. They have hours during the week and on Saturday till
about 1 pm. If you don't know the location of the graves you are
seeking, the cemetery is far too large to just wander around, although
the ponds and trees are quite pleasant. The office staff will give you a
map and a location based on their card file.

I was also shocked to find many stones had sunk down into the ground so
far as to make them invisible, even one of "mine" as recent as 1947. If
I had not had the map and exact location, I'd have never found it (it
was hard enough to find standing right on top of it.)

If you use "city" smarts, i.e., go during daylight when other people are
around, don't get too far away from your car, keep going if you
encounter suspicious persons, and remain aware of your surroundings, I
don't think Woodmere is otherwise different than many other urban
environments.

I've also had good results sending requests by mail for copies of
interment records for ancestors buried in Woodmere, even in one case
where the name had been badly misspelled, but we had a good death date
from the church record and knew he should be in Woodmere based on the
newspaper death notice.

Happy hunting....
