Subject: [MIWAYNE] No Genealogists in Detroit/Marriage & Divorce Records
Date: Mon, 9 Apr 2007 11:36:32 EDT
I disagree with this comment about no one doing genealogy in Detroit and
think it is unwarranted. I've found that many people on this mailing list are
extremely helpful and I've learned a lot just by reading other people's postings.
This is a "help" and information exchange list and not necessarily a
substitute for doing your own research. The reality is that researching in
Detroit/Wayne Co. cannot always be done online and is often very time consuming and
complicated because of the sheer volume of the records and the fact that records are
kept in a number of different places. Many of these records are handwritten
and difficult to read so that just going through the indexes (if available) is
very time consuming. I've found that some people on this mailing list ask for
look-ups without having done any of the most basic research and often ask for
look-ups of people who it turns out didn't even live in Detroit or the time
frames given are really off. Depending on the look-up request, I think its an
appropriate response when people on the list identify the locations and types of
available records for people to look up themselves. It might be different if
Wayne was a smaller county and one could go through a number of years of
records pretty easily.

I don't think there is anyone in Detroit who does genealogy. It seems
everyone is always telling you to do this or that. Pity there aren't more
genealogists in such a big city.
