I agree with Amber and Dee.

Those of us who have been doing genealogy research for several years
understand that what you have noted below is the norm for nearly all states.
Washington State is the only exception I'VE found. This state has a
database online (free image download) for a lot of death, marriages, and
older births and the Spokane library has an index and images of obits. AND
if you call the WA county of record, they will take your order, for
certificates not online, by phone with a credit card. I just wish that all
states were that progressive.
I did today find that we could search land records, wills, & some other
records in Wayne County on a county database on their website. To me - that
is new and great. Wayne county - and Michigan - has few records online.
That behooves us to volunteer our help in transcribing so that more records
can be placed online and therefore available to all.
One thing I've learned from this hobby is patience. And, that some of the
best people in the world are genealogists.
Genealogists say "thanks" for the help they have received, by helping
others. My thanks and appreciation to everyone on this list for all the
help given to others.

This is for Amber Thompson who suggested that there are no genealogists in
Detroit.
I could be totally wrong, but there appeared to be a hint of frustration in
your message. Perhaps you suggested that there are no genealogists in
Detroit because you have not been successful in obtaining the information
you wanted from this mailing list. Or perhaps you did not immediately get a
record that you requested.
Please understand a few things. First, not all the information that family
historians want is free and on the Internet. So even though someone posted a
message requesting a marriage record, it might not be available quickly with
a database search.
Secondly, people who respond on this list are genuinely trying to be of
assistance. So someone might suggest where to locate the marriage record and
even provide an address and/or phone number. Thus, while the record has not
appeared quickly in an email response, the contact information provided will
likely result in obtaining the desired record. It will take some time and
probably cost some money. That is a reality in genealogy research.
As a native Detroiter who now lives out of state, I have found this mailing
list to be a great resource for my research. I appreciate all the
information that has been offered to me over the years. And I have had to
write letters to different places and pay for copies of the records that I
wanted. That's the way it is.
I hope this will help to promote better understanding on this list.

I don't think there is anyone in Detroit who does genealogy. It seems
everyone is always telling you to do this or that. Pity there aren't more
genealogists in such a big city.
