PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

The Cave Hills and Slim Buttes Areas, east of the town of Buffalo,
SD, and west of the Cheyenne River Reservation, are sacred and historic
areas within the Great Sioux Reservation as stated in the Fort Laramie
Treaty of 1868. Parts of these areas are considered federal lands
managed by the US Forest Service. Some of these lands are being
considered for leasing for oil and gas development.

The Forest Service will hold an information meeting about the Cave
Hills and Slim Buttes areas on Friday, June 13, from 2:00-5:00 in the
afternoon at the Mother Butler Center gym, 201 Wright St., Rapid City,
SD. Laurie Walters-Clark from the Forest Service will provide the
information.

It is important for Tribal governments and people to learn what is
going to be happening in these areas as Cave Hills contains many sacred
places that should not be disturbed. The Slim Buttes area (not to be
confused with the one on Pine Ridge) is also an historic site.

Please try to attend this information meeting to learn about what is
being planned for the Cave Hills/Slim Buttes area and what you can do.
