Navajos consider changing membership requirement
Shirley urges caution
WINDOWN ROCK AZ
4/22/2004
The largest tribe is the country is considering a move that would almost
double its membership.
The Navajo Nation Council is considering a proposal to lower the minimum
blood requirement for tribal membership from one-quarter to one-eighth.
The move would change the current membership of 310,000 to 600,000.
Navajo officials did not immediately return a phone call from the Native
American Times seeking comment. But Navajo President Joe Shirley told
the Associated Press that the issue was so important that it should go
before the tribe as a whole.
"I don't think it's been thoroughly discussed," Shirley said. "I think
it can be changed, but I don't think the council should change it. It
affects the whole Navajo Nation, so the people should get to vote."
