Subject: [MN-CENSUS] Please Read & Follow Directions...Will do lookups in the Soundex for 1900 & 1920
Date: Wed, 9 Jan 2002 18:25:00 -0600
To list members,
I have ordered the MN Soundex films for 1900 and 1920 for the name Beeler.
Each film covers a range of names, not just the name I am searching. As time
permits, I am willing to do lookups for members of the list. Below I will
give the range of names each film will cover and the instructions you MUST
follow for the lookup request.
I will also include instructions of how to Soundex your name. So if the name
you seek begins with B.. it may be on this film.
1900 Soundex: film number T-1053-13.. B-426 through B-463
1920 Soundex: film number M-1569-13.. B-451 through B-520

To SOUNDEX your name:(instructions are from the NARA)
Soundex Coding Guide
Code Key Letters and Equivalents
1 b, p, f, v
2 c, s, k, g, j, q, x, z
3 d, t
4 l
5 m, n
6 r
The first letter of a surname is not coded. The letters a, e, i, o, u, y, w,
and h are not coded. Every soundex number must be a 3-digit number. A name
yielding no code numbers, as Lee, would thus be L 000; one yielding only one
code number would have two zeros added, as Kuhne, coded as K 500; and one
yielding two code numbers would have one zero added, as Ebell, coded as E
140. Not more than three digits are used, so Ebelson would be coded as E
142, not E 1425.
When two key letters or equivalents appear together, or one key letter
immediately follows or precedes an equivalent, the two are coded as one
letter, by a single number, as follows: Kelly, coded as K400; Buerck, coded
as B620; Lloyd, coded as L300.

Requirements to receive a lookup:
1) on subject line you must include the words
SOUNDEX-MN lookup (and the year (1900 or 1920) not
both years.)
2) only 1 lookup per email, so if you want a name looked
up for both years it will require two email requests.
3) in the body of the email place your SOUNDEX code, last
name in capital letters, a comma then the first name,
place of birth(if you know it), and age. If you know
the names of the members of the household, whom you
expect to be in the household.. include them. The
county, in which you expect to find them. As this
may help pinpoint your family. The Soundex will include
every person in MN by that name, so this info will help
me pinpoint your correct family.
4) do not send a request for every person of a certain
name in the Soundex. If you do I will send it back to
you with a reject notice.
You must understand, I work full time and will have to search the Soundex
for my ancestor before I can start searching for yours. I can only search
the Soundex film at my library. So after work I must make a trip to the
library to do the search. I am hoping to compile a list of names to search
for, for you the list members before my film arrives. So when I go the
library I can start immediately working on the list.
**************
What you will receive in return:.. if I find your name..
1) The information on the Soundex card for the location of your name on the
census. This will be in the form of
Name of person, County, Township, ED, sheet, line. Then you will be able to
go to your local library and order in the census film and look to see what
info in on the census for your person.
2) I will not send you all the data on the Soundex card
because that will limit, even more, the number of names for whom I can
search.
3) If you are a member of Ancestry.com, and subscribe to their census
section, you can go directly there to look at your census.
********** PLEASE Follow the Directions *******
I look forward to hearing from you and good luck in your research.
Regards,
Virginia L. Aldridge
