Hi Hanna,

South St. Paul (my birthplace) has always been in Dakota Co. Dakotah
County was one of the original Minnesota Territory counties and has
been around for a long time. It originally covered much more
territory: at one time it extended all the way from the Mississippi
River west into what later became the state of So. Dakota.
Eventually, it was divided into many other counties. Check out:
<http://www.rootsweb.com/~mngenweb/mnterr.htm>; to see the original
county structure of the Minnesota Territory 1849-1851.

Grey Cloud Island is in Washington Co. which was also one of the
original Minnesota Territorial counties. Part of it is an island
formed by the Mississippi River and it lies adjacent to Cottage Grove
and St. Paul Park and across the river from Inver Grove Heights. The
river is the dividing line between Dakota and Washington Counties
which, on some maps, may not be readily noticeable.

Hope this helps.
