Hi:
The surname Gergen, was originally spelled Goergen, and sometimes Gorgen with an umlaut over the o. That particular family came from Luxembourg, originally lived in Fischbach, and before that I have not traced yet. The other name Gegen is sometimes spelled Jegen, originally came from the Matzen area near Wilsecker in the Rheinland, and before that from Gransdorf.
And furthermore there is another family, now spelled Girgen, which is from the Rocherath, Belgium area. It also had variant spellings like Goergen and Gergen.
I hope this helps somewhat
Bob Olson
