Subject: [MNHENNEP-L] Info on Northeast Minneapolis

Though I haven't checked for several years, the MPL branch library on
Central Avenue had bound copies of the Northeaster and its predecessor.
See the Minneapolis Public Library site for e-mail/phone contact to the
Northeast branch.

Contact info for the Northeaster is at
http://www.mnnews.com/newspapers/northeaster.html. As far as I know,
the paper is not on-line.

The Northeaster is a very small & a family business so if looking for
reprints and photographs, please offer to pay a fair fee for time and
costs. They are wonderful folks! Owners are Margo and Kerry Ashmore.

Anyone researching in NE Mpls might want to consider trying a
subscription. Every issue of the Northeaster has a fairly long well
researched article on local history. The Northeaster covers news from a
very local angle - its more like a small town paper than an urban
weekly. Many in NE stay there for generations (& so even folks who have
been homeowners for 20-30 years are considered newcomers by some!).
Many of the institutions are the same as they were in the 1800s and
early 1900s - especially churches & there are lots of churches in
Northeast. Realtors are significant advertisors - you might even find a
photo or listing for a house in your history. Subscription rates are
quite reasonable.

For SW Minneapolis, expecially west of Lyndale avenue, another excellent
newspaper is the Southwest Journal. It also publishes frequent articles
on local history and its recent archive is searchable. Its on-line at

Tom, I collect Mpls history books - maybe I have something about your
ancestor or ancestors. Contact me in person with name, address, date
and any other info & I will check for you.
