Subject: [MNHENNEP] Mystery Baby

We have a bit of a mystery going in our family and maybe someone can give me some advice on solving it.
One of my aunts, who was born in 1918, had a baby at age 15 (ca. 1933) but after she delivered my grandfather and the Dr. came in and told her the baby had died. I've never really believed the baby died. Knowing my grandfather, he would have made that story up as I'm sure he didn't want her to raise a baby at that age. I've searched the MN death indexes for any babies under the last name, born during that time frame, and found none that fit. All the babies I found had parents names listed. What I'm wondering is, would a death record have been mandatory if it was stillborn, or died shortly after birth? Could she have delivered in a small private hospital and the Dr. just didn't file a death record? I'm sure if the baby lived the birth record would be sealed. Any suggestions?
