Haha- yes my brain doesn't always function as fast as I type. It is still Elk
River and my ancestors who settled there are burried there. I have family and
my cousins have family from Maine and I found while hunting the 1860 census
in Sherburne County- the majority of Elk River's inhabitants were from Canada
and Maine. I found some of my cousins ancestors (direct and collateral) that
she had lost in Maine settled in Elk River.
I imagine if they offered free land today many families would pack up the
babies and their belongings and head for a future in a new land.
My husbands family is german and I guess since Minnesota emptied out Ohio- my
husbands gr grandfather left Germany to settle in Marietta, Ohio in 1879. As
some of the descendants from my gr.gr.gr. grandfather were still in Marietta
at that time- I stepped rather gingerly tracing my family and his through
Marietta.
