When I first began my genealogy search, I thought I would only research the
direct line, dates and places, as far back as I could find. One day a nice
lady in Iowa sent me excerpts from her ggrandmother's diary from the 1880's,
telling how Will Eck (my ggrandfather) had stood guard one night when the
local postmistress had not locked the post office for the night. On another
occasion, Will had accompanied the local doctor to a farm where there was a
suspected murder. (It turned out to be a false alarm.) It sounds like Will
might have been the local law, but have not confirmed this yet. These bits
of information reminded me that these were real people, not just dates and
places. Now I welcome the tidbits shared by other folks on line.
