This is confusing indeed.
If the civil war papers that you have state that he was living in
Henderson, MN in 1865, then why would the census records show that in 1860
and 1870 he was in Clifton, WI?
I would start by checking with both Henderson, MN and Clifton,WI to see if
he owned land in either place. Also check the birth and death records for
each town/county to see if he had any children born/died there and possibly
you will also find the death of Mary Jane.
It could be that she died and he remarried quickly because he had small
children, especially if he was going off to fight inthe civil war.
Why there would be TWO wives is a good question. Again, the town/county
records may show a marriage in the early 1860's.
We know that vital records were not required to be kept in MN in those
early years, I am uncertain about Wisoconsin. However, most towns and/or
counties kept records anyway. So you may have to do some digging, even
going page by page through the records from 1859 and onward, but you will
probably find something.
It also appears you don't have death information for him. Again, I would
check those areas and see what comes up, sometimes that lists the name of
the wife.
What a hunt that will be, but given the 2 locations you should be able to
sort things out. BTW - if this is your gggrandfather, do you know where
your ggrandfather was born? That would be the best place to start looking
for other clues.
Good luck
