Obituary:
Harold E. Nelson, 92
Harold Elmer Nelson, 92, a lifelong resident of Birchdale, died Thursday, November 1, 2001, at Falls Good
Samaritan Center.
Born Sept 12, 1909, at Birchdale, the son of Olaf and Christina (Olson) Nelson, he grew up farming and
playing baseball in Birchdale.
A lifelong resident, the Birchdale community and its people were his life. He graduated from Falls High School in 1928. Together with his father, he helped to build and start
Nelson's Store, which he then ran from 1935 to 1990.
In 1951 he married Maybelle Bement Johnson of International Falls. Together they ran Nelson's Store for
over 30 years. Maybelle preceded him in death in 1984. He continued to run the store on his own with the help of Joy
Nelson, until his retirement in 1990. He then turned the business over to Joy and Ralph Nelson. He lived out his retirement at his riverside home in Birchdale, prior to moving to Falls Good Samaritan
Center in June.
Survivors include one sister, Violet Seaman of Pheonix, Ariz.; one stepson, Norman (Judy) Johnson of Jeffers, Minn.; three grandsons, Eric, Mark and Jeremy; 12 nieces and nephews, George (Becky) Nelson of the Falls, Ralph (Joy) Nelson of Birchdale, Doris (Danny) Smith of Chisholm, Leland (Linda) Nelson of Baudette, Karen (Bruce) Turban of Birchdale, Christine (Dave) Hultman of Birchdale, Judith (Soren) Olesen of Birchdale, Carol Carney of Chandler, Ariz., Joan (Tony) Charles of Granville, Ohio, Kathleen Campbell of Gilbert, Ariz., Diane (Joe) Fancher of Santa Ana, Calif., and Donald (Gail) Procunier of Glendale, Ariz.
In addition to his wife, Maybelle, and parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Ella Nelson,
Allice Nelson and Myrtle Procunier, and three brothers, Manville, Walton and Reuben.
He will be remembered for his wit, his dedication to helping and serving others and his loyalty towards cheering and jeering on the Twins and Vikings.
Funeral is planned for 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 5, at Birchdale Congregational Church, with Pastor Rosanna
Walker officiating.
Interment will be at Birchdale Cemetery.
Green-Larson Mortuary Inc. International Falls, is in charge of arrangements.
