Hi,
I don't know the man you are looking for, but my uncle,
William John Webster, was a Ranger at Anzio and I believe that he was one of
6 out of 767 Rangers in two battalions, the 1st and the 3rd, who was not
captured or killed. Several years ago, he received the Silver Star for his
participation at Anzio. He is still alive and he lives in a suburb of
Minneapolis, Minnesota. He will be 83 in Aug. I have heard him talk about
that day and it was pretty terrible. He has no idea why all his friends got
killed but not him, he saw them getting cut down on all sides of him. After
the fighting was over, he was alone. He could not get back to the American
lines, but was able to hide from the German's until the American's advanced
foreward to where he was hiding. He was not injured, but his feet were
frozen and he was sent to a hospital in England.
Just writing this makes me realize, again, how much we owe these men and
that freedom isn't free.
Thanks,
Nancy Downey
