I could easily be the confused one; I started looking in Polk due to the
issuance of the homestead certificate in Crookston (hey, I'm originally
from central MN and my geography gets weak north of Fergus Falls!)

This was my first clue on the elusive "Carl". I greatly appreciate the
help and hope I haven't sent you off on a wild chase. This may help me
narrow where to search in census records.
