Hello, Elisabeth,
I'm from East Grand Forks. As one reply correctly noted, there are two
different cities here: East Grand Forks, Polk County, Minnesota and Grand Forks,
Grand Forks County, North Dakota.
Based upon Per's birth year of 1883, I checked both the 1910 and 1920
censuses in Grand Forks County and Polk County for all males born in Sweden, but
found nothing that would be Per. If Per died between the censuses and was
living in either city, he might be buried in Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand
Forks. You can send an email inquiry to the cemetery superintendant, Mr. Robin
Purcell: (mailto:) The records
are computerized so it would be easy for him to check.
I also looked for government land records in both counties and found nothing
for Per. I did find one possible clue. On 03 August 1904, a Per Johns
Johanson from Sweden applied for citizenship in Grand Forks County (North
Dakota), volume D-11, page 245. If this is your Per, the application does not
necessarily mean he was living in Grand Forks. He could have been living in East
Grand Forks and applied at the Grand Forks County courthouse, which would
have been more convenient that traveling 25 east to Crookston to apply at the
Polk County Courthouse. The application papers should state when this Per
entered the United States and you can then determine if you want to trace this
man.
I suggest that you order this citizenship application by contacting Mrs.
Sandy Slater at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks:
(mailto:) Be sure to include
the volume and page numbers I noted and to include your mailing address.
You might also ask her to check the city directories circa 1904-1913; maybe Per
is listed.
