May 1914Another Pioneer Gone
Peter Weldon Died on Friday at Home
of his Son P.J. at Age of
81 Years
Funeral Held Here on Sunday
Deceased Was First Settler in the West Central Part of
Blakeley Township
A pioneer resident of Scott county has passed away in the person of Peter Weldon Sr.; whose mortal career was brought to a close on Friday morning, May 8, 1914 at the home of his son P.J. in this borough.
Mr. Weldon was born in Navan, County Meath, Ireland, March 15, 1833, and was therefore 81 years of age. When he was 15 years old he bid goodbye to friends and home and came to America. He settled in New York state, where he remained five years. He was then married to Ann Healey at Cazenovia and started for the West to make his fortune.
Mr. Weldon was the first white settler in the vicinity where his sons M.C. and Thomas still live. A grand type of the pioneer was he, straightforward and energetic, ever ready to do his share toward the betterment of home and community; gentle in spirit and simple in life, his closing days were tranquil and his spirit ready for its eternity.
Four children preceded him, his wife also dying 17 years ago. He is survived by four sons and three daughters;namely, Mrs. T.F. Shaughnessy, Mrs. M.P. O’Connor, Mrs. M.D. Moriarity, M.C., Thomas, P.J., and W.F. Weldon.
Mr. Weldon had the esteem of all who knew him and his death is like the removal of an old landmark, for whom the years were kind, and constantly grew in the affection of his people.
The funeral was held from the church of the Sacred Heart and was largely attended. Rev. Father Holland performed the last rites and preached the funeral sermon. The remains were laid to rest in Fair Lawn cemetery where now have been gathered about all the pioneers of the parish.
Those who came from a distance were Mrs. Thos. Weldon and daughter Mrs. Rank, Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Divine, Miss Katherine O’Neill, Mrs. Regan and grandson, Raymond Weldon and P.F. O’Neill, of St. Paul; Matt Weldon, of Hopkins; Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Moriarity, of Shakopee; and a large number from neighboring parishes.
