Surname: Bunkers, Schulte
-------------------------
Karen, Laura,
I have to believe that Karen is referring to the ditty written up by Professor
Suzanne Bunkers, in particular the page on German Immigration (http://krypton.mnsu.edu/~susanna/newpage14.htm).
It details the course of migration of her Bunkers line from there to here.
It seems to resemble what you describe.
I have to acknowledge, that like Suzanne, my own Schulte line is from the
Steinfeld/Langwege/Dinklage, Oldenburg areas and arrived in New Orleans,
stopped in New Vienna for a time before ending up in Meire Grove. Since
I've been unable to find two GGG Schulte aunts, I decided to learn a bit
about the Oldenburgian haunts here in the U.S. in hope that it might lead
somewhere, someday. It turns out that good populations of people from Oldenburg
settled in these areas:
Minster, Ohio (Auglaize County)
Oldenburg, Indiana (Franklin County)
Teutopolis, Illinois (Effingham County)
New Vienna, Iowa (Dubuque County)
Seneca, Kansas (Nemaha County)
Meire Grove, Minnesota(Stearns County)
(list from Father David Hoying of Ohio)
>From what I've learned, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that others from
Tippecanoe ended up in Stearns. I think you'll find that neighbors in Germany
left at the same time, sailed on the same ship and settled in many of the
same areas. When jumping off the boat, I would think a friendly face would
be pretty cool. Or building a life, a farm or raising a family would be
a great thing if you could do it near someone who you grew up with or were
neighbors with back in the old country. Plus, I'm sure these folks getting
off the ships weren't always made of money, so it seems to me that going
to Lafayette or New Vienna or Meire Grove where friends and family might
already be would be a comforting thought.
(In 1999, Suzanne directed me towards the book: Fred W. Petersons Building
Community, Keeping the Faith: German Catholic Vernacular Architecture in
a Rural Minnesota Parish)
