3 Jul 1916 Stephen died at home of his daughter, Mrs. C. H. [Harriet E.] Noble in Wolverton Township, Wilkins County Minnesota.
7 Jul 1916 Stephen was interred at Mitchell Cemetery Wilkins County, MN.

According to one of the affidavits in Stephen's Pension records at the National Archives, it appears he was born in 1832. See below. (I made copies of most of the relevant documents in the two jackets in his pension record). Unfortunately, his birth year varies from 1829 to 1835 and we may never pin down the actual year.

APPLICATION FOR AN INVALID PENSION
STATE OF MICHIGAN, County of Van Buren, SS.
On this twentieth day of May A. D. one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three personally appeared before me, the Deputy Clerk of Circuit Court within and for the County and State aforesaid, Stephen A. Colburn aged 32 years, a resident of Van Buren County in the State of Michigan who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical Stephen A. Colburn who enlisted in the service of the United States as a private in the Company (C) commanded by Capt Melchar in the fourth Regiment of Michigan Calvary Volunteers commanded by Col Minty in the War for the Suppression of the Rebellion in the Southern States, and was honorably discharged on the twenty seventh day of December in the year 1862; that while in the service aforesaid, and in the line of his duty, he became disabled at the time and place, and in the manner following, to wit: That soon after his enlistment at Detroit in the State of Michigan, and about the first days of September 1862 he was taken sick wi!
th a fever which continuing a short time he so far recovered as to be able to go forward with his said Regiment from Detroit to the State of Kentucky about the last days of September 1862. That he was detailed as cook after his first sickness as aforesaid and continued in the performance of that duty until after their arrival in the State of Kentucky. That at Mumfordsville in or about the first of November 1862 he was taken sick with the Typhoid Fever accompanied by a Chronic Diarrhea which so debilitated him as to cause him to be discharged as aforesaid. That he is yet greatly debilitated. That his back and kidneys are so affected by reason of such sickness that he is unable to perform any manual labor whatever.
The said Stephen A. Colburn makes the Declaration for the purpose of obtaining the benefit of the Invalid Pension Laws of the United States; and doth hereby constitute and appoint M__ Ruggles & Still of Paw Paw Mich his true and lawful Attorney[s] with full power of substitution, authorizing them to prosecute this, his Claim for a Pension, and to receive and receipt for any Draft or Certificate which may be issued thereon, and to do all other acts which may be necessary in the premises.
