I am trying to find a birth record for Josephine Scharfenberger (my
grandmother), born in Missouri (probably St. Louis area) between 1870 and
1875. She was taken in by the Jacob Gruen (wine merchant) family, appearing
in the 1880 Census under the last name Scharfenberger, and in the 1900 Census
with the last name Gruen. We do not think that the Gruen family officially
adopted her, but I could be wrong. I wish there were a way to look for
adoption papers.
