Benjamin Bray lived in Ozark County, MO. and by 9-1861 he answerad the call to join the MO. State Guard Militia.
So I would think it would be MO. where he joined.

There won't be a death certificate, as from the County or State, but the Missouri Adjutant General's office, may have had enlistment information with a very short description of him and a discharge or death record from their Military, NOT Pension Records.

So far I've not been able to get him on the SOS MO site. Are you sure he enlisted in MO?

My husband's, ggrandfather enlisted in the Union Army, his ggrandfather's brother in the Confederate, both were living in MO, but enlisted in Arkansas.

Pension records can leave you with as much confusion as you started with. Each new application can contain basically the same information with different dates for births, deaths, marriages and etc.

They can even in the end give a death date, place, and cemetery, for the wife who survived and received the pension, that can't be verified by State Death Certificates after it was a law State records were to be kept!

I suggest you get what you can from MO records, before going to National Archives for theirs. MO may have what you want. If they don't...

Then contact the National Archives or Veterans site http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/ . From the National Archives inquire about cost of his entire file. This should get you all the worthless as well as possibly the information a less than through clerk might miss or consider unimportant.

I've been glad I got the entire file and I've spent a lot and got almost nothing. In one case, I still don't know how, or if, the gentleman was related to my family. I traced him from a military photo and a few later photos in a family album from his name only. Since there was a step-greatgrandmother, it's a possibility he was through her, or not related to anyone.

So, if the cost would be a hardship, go for the cheaper options. I understand the cost has gone up. If there's a place for it, state you want his BURIAL place if it can be found.

This looks as if it could be a help with information. I haven't done much of this type research since I've had a computer. All mine was done back in the 1980's.

Did you check to see if anyone drew his Military pension? If someone did, their applications and etc. might give his burial place.
