Subject: [MO-CW] Missouri CW Pension Index Cards- Smith, Alfred
Date: Sun, 21 Jan 2001 16:16:41 -0800 (PST)

I have a genealogist worst nightmare, a GG Grandfather
named Smith. He supposedly fought in the Civil War,
but I know not on which side. One of my very elderly
2nd cousins insists he fought on both sides! He lived
in S.E. Missouri so I guess anything is possible, if
not probable? A kind soul on the MO Civil War Site
sent me some scanned images of CW Pension Index
Application Cards all for various Alfred Smiths. I
have a possible match, but unfortunately I am ignorant
about the abbreviations used on the card so don't know
how to proceed. Can anyone tell be what this would
mean in the "SERVICE" part of the same card:

F4 McCold (or McCild?) Inf.
F68 USC(last letter looks like C?) Inf.

I understand the rest of the notations, just can't
quite figure out what the above means.
I assume the index cards are the National Archives'
method of organizing the Pension Files and the
Application No. and Certificate No. are the files I
would request through them? Or am I wrong and these
are Missouri State Cards?

Thanks for any assistance anyone can offer.

Cynthia McBride
