Here is the reply to the letter I sent them about the rising costs of
pension files.

Dear Mr. Politte:

Your message was forwarded to the Archivist of the United States. He has
asked me to respond to your message. We regret the need for the very
significant increase in the fees for copies of pension files this past
November. Our new fee schedule reflected the impact of increased costs over
the past 10 years since those fees were last reviewed and a policy change
that we would copy the entire pension file. In response to the comments we
received, we decided to offer both the complete pension file and a packet of
selected documents from the pension file. A discussion of the costs is
found in the final rule on the NARA fee schedule at
http://www.nara.gov/nara/1258fin.html.

It is not likely that we will be able to reduce the fees significantly in
the future. We intend to review our fees for the pension files on a more
frequent basis to avoid such sharp increases in the fee at one time.
Because NARA does not receive appropriations to provide this reproduction
service, we must recover our costs through the fees.
