Sylvia, What military organization was he in? May 19 was a bloody day.
I have details, but need to know his organization.

Subject: [MO-CW] Medical Records at Benton Barrack's Hospital

> Does anyone know if there are any archives of the routine medical notes
kept on patients in the Benton Baracks Hospital? My great-grandfather, John
Wilbert McMeans, was in the hospital for 12 months in St. Louis (from July
1863-August 1864) according to his Company Muster Roll sheets that I got
from the National Archives. The exact quote is: "Wounded May 19, 1863 at
Walnut Hills, Miss. and in Hospital at St. Louis, Mo."
> There is also a sheet that is dated July 17th, 1863 addressed to
the commanding officer of Co. A. 9th Iowa Infantry that states:
> "In obedience to the above order, Surgeon Ira Russell in charge of
Benton Barracks General Hospital, St. Louis, MO has reported the following
named soldier of your command WITHOUT DESCRIPTIVE ROLL, to wit: John W.
McMeans, Private."
>
> In 1864 John McMeans went back to his home in Iowa, married, had
children and lived to be 78 (died in 1918). Reports that I have seen have
said that he was severely wounded - in fact it was feared that he would die
at first. I would be very interested to see the Doctor's notes, or patient
chart, if such things were kept anywhere.
