Thank you kindly Tom,

Excellent suggestions. Although I haven't sent to NARA for the full file yet, I have
checked the Roster of Union Soldiers and only found the listing for Uriah A Douthit
in Co G, 47th MO Inf (nothing for Uriah J Douthit, Co H, 47th MO Inf).

I will re-check the Roll of Honor book.

Although there is the possibility that the "alias" file imprecates Uriah as a
bigamist, the fact that there was an attorney (C.M.Miller) with the same last
name as "the widow" (Lucinda Miller) and a very similar name to the "alias"
(Charles F. Miller) makes me more suspicious of legal shenanigans than
marital ones.

The fact that Uriah was late from AR (as opposed to MO) makes me
wonder if other bogus filings of this sort might have happened. The fact that
there were 2 pension filings really makes me wonder.

For instance, the first filing in 1897 (30 years after Uriah's murder) was for
an Invalid type filing . Does this mean there was actually a living person filing
as Uriah Dowthitt (alias Charles F Miller) ?

Sarah Smith Dowthitt ("real" widow of Uriah J) filed in 1910 from NC. and
received NO Certification #. She also had no attorney.

The succesful pension fililngs were made in MO. The 2nd widow filed in 1924
and received a Certificate #......curious. yes ?

I have also checked the Census records ...Uriah J Douthit was enumerated
1850 Surry Co NC Census
1860 Sharp Co AR Census (Piney Fork Twp, Evening Shade P.O.)
1870 Sharp Co AR Census, he was gone..his widow Sarah was head of household
1880 Wilkes Co NC....Sarah and her 2 younger children were enumerated in the
household of her father, Rev Samuel Powell Smith

I checked the land records...Uriah J Dowthitt received a land grant in 1859

I checked the Tax rolls in AR, Uriah last appeared in 1867. His widow appeared in
1868.

I have checked Indexes for Cemetery Books...no Uriah.

I have checked for wills, settlements in Lawrence/Sharp Co AR...no Uriah.
I have been told that his widow settled his estate in Little Rock (Pulaski Co),
but haven't checked there yet.

I have checked the "Arkansas Gazette"...no mention of Uriah.

I haven't found records for the "North Arkansas Times" newspaper yet. There
is supposed to be an article in the 11 Jan 1868 edition that reported his
murder on or near Christmas day, 1867 near Evening Shade, AR. He was
shot 3 times, but his body wasn't found until 3 days later.

Where should I look for a coroner's inquest ?

Thank you for your help.
