I received this info from another list, thought it might be helpful.

This is how Jesse James is related to the Howard's, at least one of the ways:

Mary Morning HOWARD (b.Jul 14, 1784 SC-d.1869 Simpson Co, KY), married on Oct
1, 1807 in Logan Co, KY to James WEST (b.Aug 27, 1772 Simpson Co, KY-d.1844
Simpson Co, KY). She was the daughter of Amelia PUTNAM and Mr. ?? HOWARD of
S.C.

Their son was Tillman Howard WEST (b.May 8, 1810 Simpson Co, KY-Oct 2, 1884
Kansas City, MO) md. in 1837 to Elizabeth JAMES (b.Nov 25, 1816 Logan Co,
KY-d.Nov 2, 1904 Oakland, MO).

Elizabeth JAMES was the daughter of Rev. John M. JAMES (b.1775 Hanover,
VA-d.c.1827 Logan Co, KY) and wife Mary "Polly" POOR (b.c.1790-d.1827 Logan
Co, KY).

Elizabeth's brother was Robert Sallee JAMES (b.Jul 17, 1818 Logan Co,
KY-d.Aug 18, 1850 Placerville (formerly Hangtown), El Dorado Co CA) who md.
on Dec 28, 1841 Scott Co, Kentucky to Zerelda COLE (b.Jan 29, 1825 Midway,
Woodford Co., Kentucky-d.Feb 10, 1911 Kansas City, MO).

Robert Sallee JAMES and Zerelda COLE were the parents of the famous Jesse
Woodson JAMES (b.Sep 5, 1847 Kearney, Clay Co MO-d.Apr 3, 1882 St Joseph,
MO).

There are probably other connections as well. Here's a good site dealing with
Jesse James' ancestry:
