I first saw the poem on the memorial site for the USS Cole in October of
2000. It is listed as anonymous. If you would like to see it go to
www.allisonheart.com/vet/vet.html <http://www.allisonheart.com/vet/vet.html>
. The poem is about ¾ of the way down the page.

I was deeply moved by this magnificent epitaph, "What Is A Vet?" I
wonder
who wrote it? Whoever it was reached into the inner workings of his
soul to
get the words, the images and the pride! I wish I had written it!
So, to
you, the writer of this wonderful piece, I offer my sincerest
thanks! You
have said what every Vet wants to hear, even those who are no longer
with us.
I hope this work will someday be placed at the Tomb of the Unknowns,
and at
other Veterans' resting places for it is their epitaph too.
Sincerely, Jim
Eisenhour,
Belton, MO.

Sat. Sept. 17: We are still moving this morning. We passed Sulphur
Springs this morning and reached Jefferson Barracks about 11 oclock,
disembarked and got into camp about 2 oclock. Went up and took a look at the
barracks this evening. They are quite nice and very beautifully arranged.
The 7th Kansas Cavalry went on up the river. All the Division is not in yet.
