In New Orleans before the Civil War, a bank note valued at ten dollars was called a Dix, French for ten. Riverboat men would refer to these ten dollar notes as dixies & when asked as they journeyed South, where they were headed, they would respond that they were heading downriver to pick up some dixies. Etymologists believe this story is the origin of the word Dixie, as well as the title of the South, Dixie Land.
