Ted and Kathy,

I've found the US Park Service Civil War database very helpful. Things to bear in mind are that they enter soldiers several times with various spellings to help folks find relatives, and that there was little record keeping for some of the smaller confederate units. For these you often have to really beat the bushes.

I find that if there is a fairly uncommon name, doing a search on it gives a good distribution of family members during the 1860s. If you know a little of the larger family history, you can get an idea of who was a cousin of whom. This can help you track down someone you can't find directly with the spelling of the name you have.

Remember also that genealogy of Southern families can be hampered by both intentional and unintentional destruction of records. A lot of courthouses burnt down.

If you have names, go to the soldiers and sailors system at
http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/

click on soldiers and it brings up a search page. You can use last and
first name and state or any combination. Most of the known rolls are here
unless you are looking for PA.
