I found a Charles and Samuel Stewart in the Civil War Soliders and Sailors System website, both listed with the 2nd Missouri Cavalry. What struck me as interesting in your post was that my ancestors were in the 2nd MO Cav, and also came from a Jefferson Township. You mentioned your ancestors where from Jefferson Township in Johnson County. Mine were Daniel, Hugh and Blair McGee from Jefferson Township, Wayne County in the southern part of Missouri. Blair was in the Missouri State Guard. Also to answer your question about the SCV, it's an organization of Son's of Confederate Veterans. I am joining a similar organization for women, the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

I am listening to all of this with interest as I am from the far west and
only through genealogy am beginning to see what a terrible time it was for
everyone in the Civil War in Missouri. I am curious as to what this SCV is
you all keep mentioning.
My third great grandfather William Stewart was from Harrison Co., Ky. and
moved to Johnson Co., Mo. where he is in Jefferson Township in 1860 with his
idiot brother Charles, his third wife, and his two sons by his second wife
Samuel 18 and Charles 16. His son John, my gg grandfather, had gone west in
1852 and ended up in Washington where I am from. Sam and Charles fought for
the 2nd Missouri from 1861 or 2 and one was a guard for General Price. I
have no idea what happened to William, his wife, and his brother during the
war as there is no record of them anywhere after 1860. The boys survived
and went on to marry and have families. William was 56 in 1860 although he
says on the census he was 50. I gather this was not too old to end up
fighting. I don't know if the General Order 11 applied to Johnson County or
not. I would guess he supported the South given his sons fought for them.
Is it possible he was murdered or forced to move if living in that county?

will learn a lot when I read it. My knowledge of Quantrill, and the events
surrounding him, is minimal, so I expect I will learn a lot. I am glad to
hear you praise Leslie's book, since that is the main one I have read.
Time-Life had a volume on the Frontier War (I think that might be what they
called it.) Steele and Cottrell tell a little about it in Civil War in the
Ozarks. Shelby Foote almost seemed to think that it was beneath his notice,
and he hardly seems to be a Northern Sympathizer.

were innocent bystanders. Many of them probably had ridden on raids into
Missouri. The plea of not harming women does not move me, considering that
their fathers, husbands, lovers, and sons were murdered in front of their
eyes. Your comparison to the Enola Gay seems apt. It would also be
relevant to compare Quantrill to those who planned the attack on the World
Trade Center. Folks who have little military power use what means they can
to accomplish their goals.

> There are so many threads to the story that it hardly seems possible to
know where to start. I think it is pretty stupid to jail the wives and kin
of suspected guerrillas, either in 1863 or 2004. I use Bingham's picture on
the home page of my Yahoo family site. I am sure that a lot of the partisan
rangers were trying to get vengeance for real wrongs. It was probably way
to late to defend their homes. I tend to feel differently about folks
defending Murfreesboro or Atlanta.

> From what little I have seen, no matter how you tell the story, Quantrill
had to be lying at some point. I am sure that he was not a Southerner, he
certainly was not defending his own home, and he was not getting vengeance
for any past injuries to himself or his family. I try not to judge
historical figures, not even Adolf Hitler or Mother Theresa. I tend to
think that political leaders use folks desire for revenge to foster their
own aims, which may be totally opposed to those who they get to do their
will.

> As to my own family, I have learned since my last post that Jackson Benton
McFerrin was murdered almost a month before the raid by Jennison's
Jayhawkers, his murders were local people from Cass County, wearing masks,
and and he never served in the Confederate Army. His son, however, did
enlist in the CSA after the fact. I am sure many of the McFerrin's in the
CSA in Missouri, Tennessee, and Alabama were his cousins.

and sister's husband) was living in the Kansas City/Westport area, and
exempt from General Order # 11 and the Emancipation Proclamation. I haven't
checked SCV requirements lately, but if a cousin of an ancestor counts, I
might still qualify. We have three camps of the SCV here in Madison,
Wisconsin, and a rather large Confederate graveyard in the middle of town.
