Ted,
My database only has information from one source, and I haven't taken the time to cross-check other records. I have Cyrus B Gaither in Co B of the 8th Battalion Infantry. Most of the soldiers in this company went to Co F of the 9th Regiment Infantry. I have seen Clarkson's Cavalry mentioned, but I was confused. The way I finally wrote it down was that the 9th Regiment was formed from four companies of Clark's Regiment, and five companies of the 8th Battalion, and is come times listed as the 9th (Clark's) Regiment. I do not show Gaither in the 9th Regiment, but, as I said, I have not double checked everything, and I assume that your information is correct and mine is incomplete.
I would think that almost all of the soldiers in these regiments were recruited "behind enemy lines" and taken by scouts south to enlist. Probably a lot of them actually enlisted in Arkansas, after a long journey. I tried to see if I could correlate the roster of Co D of the 8th Battalion with census records for Cass County, but did not have much luck. I did not try real hard. My impression was that the companies were probably formed from recruits from all over, probably based on when they arrived at Confederate Camps. This would be unlike regiments that were frequently formed from a particular region, far from the battlefield.
When I get the pension records for Samuel Benton McFerrin, I suspect that I will have a better picture of the history of the regiments. Back to Clark's Regiment. Some of the companies were put in a cavalry regiment that was sent to the Indian Nations. I vaguely remember that this might have been called Clarkson's Cavalry, but I could easily be mistaken.

I have problems some times trying to get the regiments straight. I ordered
the card for my wife's ancestor Siron Bass Gaither who lived in Wright Co.
MO. I figured that Co. B was from around Wright County but it says he
joined the unit in Arkansas. Would this be the same 8th Bn?
Here is what his card says
AMISSOURI SOLDIERS (1861-1865) WAR BETWEEN THE STATES
Gaither, Siron B. (Given name also borne as Cyrus) pvt.
Co. F. 9th Mo. Inf. (Co. B, 8th Bn., Mo. Inf.)
Enlisted Nov 17/62 Enlisted at Cp. Horsehead, Ark.
Paroled Jun 7/65 at Alexandria, La.
Confirmation of Record
Surrendered May 26/65 at New Orleans, La.
See alsoCCapt. Holt=s Co., Colman=s Regt.
I found a description of the 9th on the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors
System. They say the 9th was organized in November 1862 by consolidating
the 8th together with Clarkson's Missouri Cavalry Bn.
