Gae,

I have a bad habit of talking about things that I don't know a lot about. The saving grace is that I do it in public so someone who knows better can correct me.

I believe I read on this list, some time back (and have since seen things to reinforce it) that membership in the "Enrolled Missouri Militia" simply meant that the military authorities listed the names of all military aged folks on their rolls so that they would have additional authority to enforce martial law without any interference from civil authority. My guess would be that a person who later enlisted for real, would be "discharged" from the EMM.

Again, this should not be taken as having any authority. I have never done a lot of research on the issue, but it fits what little I know about the history of martial law in Missouri during the entire war.

About the same time (Sep 23, 1862) JOHN GOODRICH, my great Grandfather "enrolled" MO "Militia" 71st Regiment 5th "Provisional" and was "detailed" to Company "I" (eye). He was "discharged" 30th 1863. What would have been happening to cause that discharge and then reenlistment?

What do all these terms mean and what kind of service was this compared to his later service as a proper "enlisted" private in Company "K", 7th Reg't MO Infantry on June 10, 1864? From there he served in Company "B", 11th MO and was discharged at St. Louis Jan 15, 1866.

The Cornell website has masses of information that I'm still sorting through for action by any of John Goodrich's units. Thanks, Gae
