I see three records for Samuel Burns in Missouri Union regiments on the National Park Service's Soldiers and Sailors system. Since units were reorganized several times, more then one of them could be the same person. One set of brothers I was researching showed up in many Union regiments, with several variations on the name. It helps to study the units history and find out when it was formed, and when it was reorganized.

Thank you all for all of your help and information as to how to
find things. I was so excited to find the emails this morning! My gr
grandfather Sam as we called him, or Samuel Burns, always told family he was
born in MO., but no census except one verified it, and it was so hard to
read, we could not be sure. Even when he was young, I could not find him.
Later, he was the one neighbors would call on to prepare a body for funeral
and make the coffin. One day he used the same rasor without making sure it
was sterile. He died the same week and was buried on the farm, without a
headstone. Now, no one can find where he is. I would love to know more about
his service in the Union, and where they fought. I have so many questions! I
hope time will tell. I had one gr grandfather on each side in the war, the
other was in TX. I have found out about him and his family. I have so much
more hope now for the Burns side. Thank you!

Peggy
