It simply means a Yankee clerk or officer at some point made this notation,
suggesting his status as a combatant was based on other than choice. It could
be true or not, or it could be a note added by a friendly prison guard
intended to help place him in line for release, parole or better treatment. In any
event, it came too late. Rock Island was a hellhole, and had the highest
mortality rate (by far) of any wartime prison.
