seems to me I run into more families that DIDN'T fight in the war,
not sure why. I can't find records for a number of people, and wonder
if they're just elusive? how would I find out for certain? I've
checked the Soldiers and Sailor website for them.

as an example, I have a family with 3 younger sons (the older sons,
if they exist, are unknown to me), one who removed to California in
1851, but the other two remained in Texas all their life. none of
them seem to be in the CW index.

James Alfred Collins abt 1828-bef 1880

Francis Lee Collins 1832-1875 to California

twin of

Louis Davis Collins 1832-bef 1900 BODY { font-family:Arial,
Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:12px; }
they had some nephews (sister's twin sons) whom I believe I may have
found CW records for,

Francis M. Boykin

John D. Boykin

who had half brothers who did fight in the CW;

William Davis McDonald

James Martin McDonald

as far as I can find, early Texas tombstones range from totally
illegable to non-extant, with nothing useful in between. often made
of sandstone, time, wind and water have washed away what-ever
information was on them. so I'm told, anyway.

I know that in some families all the men fought, in some families
brothers took opposite sides, those that couldn't fight hauled goods
or lodged soldiers, whatever they were able to do to help the cause,
but why whole families not fighting? it could have got them
lynched-no matter which side they were on. what were their reasons?

in my tree, I can only find one family I can document as having
fought. I have stories of some working on the rails, a mechanic of
mine kept the trains working. I also have a Jayhawker (sorry, folks,
can't choose my ancestors) who is pretty much undocumented. would
love to dig into the court records on him...but why so few soldiers
in my tree? the irony is that the family that did fight? their father
had a Quaker birthright. go figure.

thanks for your thoughts.
