Ann,
I'm not here to advocate any genealogy program as being better than any
other. Each of us has different needs, and different degrees of interest in
learning computer software. I use The Master Genealogist, and can confirm
that it will allow you to perform just about any kind of a search you could
ever think up, and report the results in a variety of ways. Searches of any
field(s) you specify for any county and/or state (or group of counties
and/or states) is very easy to accomplish with The Master Genealogist. When
I say "easy", I mean it is easy once you learn how to use the program's
reporting system. I am not aware of any limits on the number of individuals
you can handle with this program.
I love the program, but it is a bit daunting when you first begin using it,
because it is so flexible, and you need to decide how you want to use the
program. I certainly don't recommend it for everyone. I wrote a fairly
sophisticated genealogy system for the Apple II in the early 1980's, and
used it exclusively for about 15 years. When I wrote the first version of
my system, there were no commercial genealogy programs available. When I
published a book on my Landwehr line in 1986, more than half of the chapters
in the book were "written" entirely by the computer system. The Master
Genealogist was the first (and only) program I found that did everything
that my own system did (and, of course, a LOT MORE than my system did). I
switched systems in the late 1990's.
There are several very good genealogy programs available today. Family Tree
Maker is very popular. Reunion, with Lanita apparently uses, is, I believe,
a good program. Generally speaking, genealogy programs range from those
that are very easy to learn and use, but do not provide a lot of features,
to those that have a significant learning curve, but are capable of just
about anything you can think of doing. I believe that The Master
Genealogist anchors one end of that spectrum.
Annd, you probably know more about the programs available today than I, but
you asked about programs that are flexible in their searching capability,
and I wanted to make sure that you were aware of The Master Genealogist.
Mike
