When I was a kid growing up in Oregon County, we got really excited when mom
got a new electric range in the spring of 1948. You see getting up wood was
an never ending chore for boys. One of the things we didn't count on was
that the range didn't put out any heat so dad had to put the wood stove back
up in the kitchen that winter. But carrying or pumping water, trying to keep
milk and meat from spoiling in the summer and cutting wood were big time
jobs. That thermostat on the wall is a neat thing to have, not to mention an
automatic ice maker.
