Dave,

Adair County was formed in 1841. In 1820, part of it was in Pike County and part was in Howard County. By 1830, its land was partly in Randolph County and partly in Chariton County. As of 1840, all of what is now Adair County was part of the larger Macon County. With Putman County boadering Adair County on the north, maybe the family moved twice, just not far each time?

Hope this helps.
