Have you seen the image of James' death certificate? From the information
you gave, I suspect you have, but in case not, this will take you to it.

It does show Mary Shaffer as his mother and the informant was James, Jr. so
it would seem to be fairly reliable. Strange that he would not know his
grandfather's name, though.
