Bill,
Thank you for your reply. My interest in the Stephens family results from
digging around in a field on their property and turning up two graves. One
stone for Irena Lee and one foot stone with the initials L.A.S. I was
checking to see if the Linnie Stephens in the 1800 census could possibly
have been the L.A.S. on the foot stone. From your information we can rule
out Linnie.

As soon as I can clean the stone, clear the fence row and reset the stone,
I'll send pictures to Donna for posting.

Again, thank you for your help.

Jack

Jack,
Finding James Albert Stephens in Flat Creek Township in 1900 with wife Mary
Susan the mother of nine children with eight living and since there were
seven
children in the home I searched for the two older girls, Linnie and Pearl
from
the 1880 census.

Pearl Stephens, age two in 1880, died Oct 16, 1898 and is buried with her
parents at Cassville Cemetery. This means Linnie was one of the eight living
children in 1900 so I searched marriage records prior to 1900 and found one
possibility in Marriage Book H:

256 McCARRELL, James F (28) Purdy Stephens, Lena U (20)
Cassville 3-21-1897 A K Gurley, MG At Monett.

James F McCarrell was age 12 in 1880, in the home of Samuel H and Minerva
McCarrell, Shoal Creek Township. They were still there in 1900 but I did not
find
James F McCarrell in Barry County. It would seem that both James F and Lena
U
were the correct ages in 1897 to correspond with ages reported in the 1880
census but the first name of Lena U as a match is speculative at best.

This Obituary is from the Cassville Republican 1900, listed in the August
2000 issue of Ancestors Unlimited.

McCarroll, Pearl, The remains of Pearl, daughter of J F and Lanna McCarroll
of Carterville, were brought to Cassville, Thursday, and interned in the
Cassville Cemetery. The services were held at the grave.

Although the spelling of McCarroll does not agree with McCarrell, naming her
daughter for her sister, Pearl, who also died young, seems like a plausible
thing for Linnie, Lena, Lanna to have done.

A check of the 1900 Jasper County census would prove this exercise correct
or
merely speculation on my part.
Best of luck with this.

Bill
