There were forty Cowden's in Boone county 1860 according to Ancestry.com,
including your family in Rocheport:

Cowden, Hiram (26), farmer, VA
Martha J (23), MO
Charles E (6 months), MO

Rocheport is on the Missouri river, about 15 miles west of Columbia.
