On Saturday I was in St. Joseph and found that some births from 1891-1909 were recorded in a large book which is at the downtown public library. There are two listed for Lycurgus Shipp and Louise Ellen McKown (mistakenly called "Craven" in the first listing, but that was the name of Ellen's step-father): Leota Beatrice born 1 Jan 1896 and LaVeta Gertrude, 21 Aug 1903. The address for the first birth is 2134 So 13 St. and for the other, 2215 Charles. Both Leota and LaVeta appear with Lycurgus and Ellen in the 1910 census. None of this makes the 1900 census data any clearer.
Also in the 1910 census under "Number of years married" it says 20 for both Lycurgus and Ellen, and in the column for marital status is "M2" for each. I assume that's designating a second marriage. I can't read the headings for the next two columns, which say 10 and 6 for Ellen, but I think those are the numbers for how many children she's had and how many are living.
