I haven't followed this thread but above is the only John I found born in MO even close to 1870 on the 1880 census.

Wonder if Mary passed during childbirth or perhaps this Mary is the young wife and not a daughter. Same with the gdaugther. Strange that is shows her parents were born in KY when the family was obviously in the midwest by then.
